English Club to Improve Students’ Speaking Skills: A Case Study of an Indonesian Islamic Senior High School

This research aimed to investigate the role of English Club toward successful students. was qualitative in form a case study. It took place at an Islamic Senior High School Sungai Penuh, Jambi Province, Indonesia. involved 4 participants: 1 teacher and 3 employed interview, observation checklist, audiovisual recording. The findings this revealed that: first, students did not maximize their chances speak English. caused by function itself which preparation face debate speech competition. However, got self-confidence speaking skills: vocabulary fluency. Second, applied student-centered approach. In content selection, she selected related national values, students’ experiences, appropriate level learning. But, ignored local values. teaching, used six strategies: setting goals, providing tasks that stimulate thinking, giving responsibility, working group, managing time flexible ways, refined understanding using critical thinking. helping English, polished corrected language. Further, peer Third, learning environments were good enough. cultivating responsibility learner catered. Based on findings, it can be concluded competitions however also improved skills increased vocabulary, self-confidence, fluency.
